Christmas trees carries both religious and secular meanings. They promise hope and offer brightness in the darkest time of year.

The Story of Christmas Trees

Decorating with evergreens began much earlier than Christmas, when folks celebrated the winter solstice – the shortest day of the year. Evergreens are the most visible symbol of those ancient celebrations. The well-known 1824 carol dedicated to the tree is translated into English as “O Christmas Tree,” but the title of the original German song is simply “O, Tannenbaum,” meaning fir tree.
